Caritas raises €54,868 for Italy quake victims
The Caritas Malta Emergency Commission has raised €54,868 in aid of the victims of the earthquake which struck the Aquila region in Italy last April. The amount collected is being sent to Caritas Italiana who, with Caritas in the Diocese of Aquila, are embarking on a construction project aimed at assisting vulnerable people get a new start in life.
When l’Aquila, particularly Abruzzo, were hit by the earthquake on 6th April 2009, Caritas Internationalis expressed its support to the thousands made homeless and started raising funds to be chanelled through Caritas Italianana to assist the stricken community.
Mgr Victor Grech, Director of Caritas Malta, thanked contributors to the fund including the parishes, persons who made transfers to the appropriate bank accounts, and those who called personally at Caritas offices to make donations. He said that once again the people of Malta have shown their generosity, this time to a neighbouring community devastated by a natural disaster Big-heartedness is a distinguishing characteristic of the Maltese people, and it comes to the fore when the occasion rises both locally and on the international scene.
