In a statement released on Saturday, Labour Party spokesperson for Youth and Culture Dr Owen Bonnici has called on the government to stop postponing the protection of Tarxien temples.
Yet again, the Tarxien temples have suffered damages following the recent rainfall, said Dr Bonnici. Since this is not the first time that the temples have suffered damage because of the weather, with the latest incident occurring nine years ago in November 1999, Dr Bonnici said that it was time the Government heeded expert advice to erect a shelter around the temples.
Dr Bonnici pointed out that the Labour Government of 1996-1998 had prepared a project plan for the protection of these UNESCO-recognised World Heritage Sites. He expressed disappointment at the fact that the Nationalist Government never put these plans to good use.
Mr Bonnici said that it was essential for our heritage to be managed with vision and foresight, rather than in reaction to crises. Challenges have to be met and countered head-on, he said.
