Marsa Sports Club Squash Open tournament
The Marsa Sports Club Squash Section organised the recent Marsa Squash Open Tournament at the Marsa Sports club. Over 30 players in three separate categories took part in what turned out to be an entertaining and interesting day of squash at Marsa.
Squash Section member Carl Camilleri was as usual on hand to keep everything running smoothly and have the usual organisers’ headaches over the last minute withdrawals and late requests to join in. Mark Lupi won the ‘A’ event beating James Bonello Ghio 3-1. Lupi won the first 2 sets comfortably, but Bonello Ghio fought back to take the third set. Lupi however regained his momentum and won the fourth set hands comfortably to register his first win of 2009.
The ‘B’ event was won by youngster Colette Sultana.
The final match against Tomas Mrozek was a close and interesting game with Sultana edging out the player from the Czech Republic 3-1. This was Sultana’s final tournament before participating in the Austrian Junior Open in Vienna at the beginning of March.
The ‘C’ event, for tournament newcomers, was won by Miguel Debono who beat Luis Ferron 3-0 in the final. Debono had a close fought match against Ryan Rizzo in his semi-final. Rizzo, only 12 years old, lost 2-3 to Debono in a very entertaining match. The tournament boasted a total of seven juniors from the Marsa Squash Section junior coaching program.
Most of these juniors started playing squash only 3-4 years ago and it is a great success for the work carried out by the Marsa Squash section over the past years. The next event planned at Marsa is the annual ‘handicap’ event in March.
This popular event see’s players of all standards playing against each other with various advantages for the lower ranked players giving them a chance to compete on an even level against some of the too ranked players.
