AFM rescue 77 migrants
Posted on August 20th, 2012
The Rescue and Coordination Centre (RCC) of the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) has reported that a boat possibly carrying undocumented migrants was in Malta’s Search and Rescue Region. An AFM B200 King Air aircraft was scrambled to the area to locate and investigate the reported vessel. A rubber dinghy carrying a group of migrants was eventually successfully located and monitored. The Operations Centre of the AFM dispatched a Protector Class Patrol Vessel (P51) to the position. After accessing the situation it was decided that the dinghy was not in a position to continue its voyage and therefore all the 77 migrants were transferred onboard P51.
The Offshore Patrol vessel P51 is expected to arrive at Hay Warf at around midnight.
