Rescued migrants headed to Tunisia
A group of 74 migrants, who had been rescued by the Tunisian fishing-vessel “Lofti” on Saturday, are now heading towards Tunisia aboard a Tunisian Navy vessel following an agreement between the Tunisian and Italian authorities.
The rescued migrants remained aboard the “Lotfi” in a position south of the Italian island of Lampedusa, since early Saturday morning, when they were rescued. The 74 rescued individuals were not in distress, and remained outside Italian territorial waters off the island as they were refused disembarkation throughout Saturday and Sunday by the Italian authorities who claimed theirs was not a “safe port”.
The “Lotfi” rescued the migrants from a position 53 nautical miles from Tunisia, 50 nautical miles from Lampedusa and 120 nautical miles from Malta, whilst in international waters.
