Hockey: Qormi trounce Sliema
Laferla Insurance White Hart H.C. vs Mr. Clean Floriana YS H.C. 2-6 (H.T 0 – 4)
Umpires Ray Micallef & Robert Aquilina
Floriana could not have had a better start as barely had 3 minutes lapsed when they were already two up. First it was Christian Bonello who powered himself into the White Hart area to beat Vassallo Agius with a neat flick, and then it was Ivan Magro who dribbled his way into the shooting area to score goal number two. Floriana kept up the pressure and added a third through Marvin Vella when he pushed the ball home from close range. White Hart did try to put their act together, but to no avail and suffered a fourth through Edward Hughes.
On the resumption White Hart were a different outfit and on the 43rd pulled one back through Luke Borg Costanzi following a well taken short corner. They kept up the pressure and kept their opponents with their back to the wall, however it was just not their day. On the 55th Kevin Filletti messed up a sitter and from the resultant counter attack Marvin Vella beat Vassallo Agius from an acute angle to make the score 5 – 1. Within 3 minutes Floriana made it 6 -1 through Dave Evans. By means of a penalty stroke Luke Borg Costanzi made the final score read 6 – 2.
BDO Sliema Hotsticks H.C.vs Pasta Paiotti Qormi H.C. 0-5 (HT 0-2)
Umpires: Reno Cremona & Edward Hughes
From the very first whistle Qormi surged forward and by the 3rd could have opened the score through Gareth Dimech had it not been for a timely save by Luke Mallia.
On the 7th a double save by Ramon Chircop in Qormi’s goal prevented Sliema from taking a surprise lead. From now on it was Qormi all the way, and on the 13th opened the score through Owen Piscopo, when he concluded from close range a short corner move. Qormi kept on searching for more goals and added another when Jonathan Borg converted a penalty stroke.
In the second half Sliema did try to be more effective and managed to trouble Chircop through Ryan Dalli and Ryan George but their efforts were well dealt with by the Qormi goalkeeper. On the 45th Qormi added a third, Keith Calleja brilliantly dribbled his way into the Sliema area, turning circles round Mallia, to set up Phillip Magri for the easiest of goals. In the 52nd Daniel Micallef made it 4 nil with a solid push from the edge of the D.
On the 60th John Williams rounded off the score when he fully extended his stick to meet a cross from Gareth Dimech with the ball ending up in goal over the diving Elton Farrugia, who had substituted Mallia in goal.
