August slightly cooler than average
MaltaWeather.com has reported that August was an uneventful month with slightly below average temperatures for this time of the year. The mean maximum temperature of 31.2°C was 0.5°C below average, while the mean minimum temperature of 23.5°C was 0.1°C below average. This meant that the mean monthly temperature of 27.4°C was 0.3°C below average.
The highest maximum temperature of 34.9°C on the 20th and the 21st was way below the record. In fact, the highest ever August temperature was of 43.0°C in 1999. On the 14th of the month the lowest minimum temperature of 20.8°C was reached. The temperature dropped to a chilly 18.0°C on 23rd August 1997, the coolest August night on record.
August is usually a dry month with just 6.0mm and only one or two days of rain. However, August 2011 was mainly sunny with just a few clouds at times and only a few drops of rain in some locations towards the end of the month.
The most frequent wind direction was from the northwest with an average wind speed at Zebbug Malta of 8.8km/h. The strongest gust of 53.7km/h was recorded on the 9th due to the presence of a low pressure system over Italy and the Balkans. The corresponding highest gust on the same day at Mellieha was of 68.5km/h.
