EU allocates €15million for Malta’s border control
The EU Commission said that in 2012 Malta will receive €14.9 million of assistance under the EU’s External Borders Fund.
This Fund aims to provide financial support to member states for border management, and aid in the implementation of the provisions of the Schengen regulations and the issuance of visas.
In 2011 Malta had only received €2.7 million under the same fund.
In a statement issued on Friday the EU Commission said that in allocating the funds the Commission took in account the recent events in the Mediterranean region which have prompted large numbers of people to flee the region, some of them towards Europe.
Italy has benefited from a significant increase of its allocation, from €32 million in 2011 to €52 million in 2012. Malta, Cyprus, Spain, Greece and France will also benefit from a substantial increase of their allocation.
