Consumer Affairs Council concerned about TV channel situation
The Consumer Affairs Council is preoccupied with the prevailing situation in the telecommunications sector in as far as consumer rights are concerned. The recent removal of two popular channels from the major cable operators programmes has again triggered many complaints by consumers in this sector.
The Council feels that this sector is probably the one where most complaints by consumers are being registered. Such complaints could include possible misleading advertising, unfair contract terms, unfair commercial practices, difficulties to move from one operator to the other and other instances of possible abuse of consumer rights.
The Consumer Affairs Council notes that the matter is already being scrutinised by the Consumer and Competition Division as directed by the Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said.
The Council will be holding meetings with the Malta Communications Authority and the Consumer and Competition Department to discuss these issues.
Decisions by the authorities should be given wide publicity for the benefit of all concerned as empowered consumers, fully aware of their rights, is the way forward.
