Video: One dead, others missing in Mosta fireworks factory explosion
At least one person was killed at the Mosta fireworks factory which exploded with a series of three powerful blasts at around 15:00 CEST on Friday afternoon. A massive plume of smoke was seen rising in the air soon afterwards with the surrounding fields on fire.
One person is confirmed dead in the explosion with others reported still missing. At the time of the blasts, there were around 10-15 fireworks enthusiasts carrying fireworks to be taken for the feast.
Civil Protection employees, the police and ambulances are currently on site. Mosta is this weekend celebrating the feast of the Assumption. The feast is expected to be cancelled after this tragedy.
Today’s was the fourth explosion involving a fireworks factory this year. Two people died in an explosion at St Sebastian fireworks factory near Qormi in February and another man died in a similar blast between Zejtun and Marsaxlokk in May. However, there were no injuries in an explosion at a Gharghur fireworks factory in April.
