Envic Galea re-elected as European Judo Union General Secretary
Envic Galea has been re-elected as European Judo Union General Secretary for the second term.
In 1991 Envic Galea was elected Assistant General Secretary at the Ledra Marriott Hotel in Athens Greece. Last Friday 28th November 2008 at the Metropolitan Hotel, in Athens, Greece he was reconfirmed as General Secretary until 2012 during the Annual Congress of the European Judo Union. This makes Envic Galea the longest serving member of this executive committee of the European Judo Union, having already served 17 years and now extended to 2012. Moreover, this re-election means that the Secretariat Office of the European Judo Union will be in Malta for another 4 years. This office, manned by Ms Louisa Galea and Ms Alexis Milne, is responsible for the day to day running of the European Judo Union, including the organisation of Directing Committee Meetings and Congresses, managing daily correspondence between the 50 Member Federations and the Directing Committee Members, and assisting the various Commissions of the European Judo Union in the coordination of more than 100 events during the calendar year.
During this long term of office, Envic Galea occupied the important posts of Assistant General Secretary, and then in Malta in 1995 he was elected as Head Sports Director. He then moved to 1st Vice President (Sports). In 2000 he became Education Director and in 2004 in Budapest, he was elected General Secretary, a post he was reconfirmed in last Friday.
During his term, Envic piloted the introduction of the Cadet European Championships, the Foundation and Honours Degree at Bath University for High Performance Judo Coaches, produced the EJU Handbook and Event Contracts and since 1995 chairs the Medical and Anti-doping commission. He also held posts on the International Judo Federation as Member of the Education Commission and presently on the Projects and Development commission. As a member of this commission Envic is responsible for the drafting of the new rules and coordinating with the IOC on the organisation of the Judo section at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore 2010 and the Schools & Universities projects of the IJF, who are following the successful introduction of Degrees in Coaching at important Universities.
