“The Carmen Ballet by Spanish dancers from Valencia is not only a unique event for the Maltese public to assist to a performance by top professional Spanish dancers but also an event with a noble goal: that of collecting funds for the Malta Community Chest Fund”. This was stated by Mrs Margaret Abela during a courtesy call by the Spanish Ambassador, Maria Isabel Vicandi at San Anton Palace during which the Ambassador gave information about the Ballet which will be held at The Mediterranean Conference Centre on the 4th of June 2010 at 20.30 CEST.

Mrs Margaret Abela thanked Ambassador Vicandi for supporting the Malta Community Chest Fund and said that this initiative by the Spanish Embassy should set an example to other Embassies on how fund-raising events in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund can be organised.

Ambassador Vicandi explained that the Ballet is being organised by the Spanish Embassy in Malta under the patronage of President George Abela to mark the end of the six-month Presidency of the European Union Council by Spain. The modern adaptation will be interpreted by the prestigious Ballet Corps of the Teatres de la Generalitat of Valencia, which is being brought over by the Embassy of Spain in Malta. The Ballet Corps of the Teatres de la Generalitat is a public dance company made up of 20 dancers, 19 of whom shall be travelling to Malta.

Over the years it has built a broad choreographic repertoire reflecting the international dance scene. Its repertoire includes works by Jiri Kylian, Nacho Duato, Thierry Malandain, Alicia Alonso and Wil Swanson. Carmen is choreographed by Ramon Oller with most of the music being taken from Bizet’s opera.
