Sandro Chetcuti, a GRTU council member and contractor was charged on Friday morning with the attempt to murder GRTU Director-General Vince Farrugia.

The Times reports that Chetcuti was also charged with beating up Mr Farrugia, causing serious injuries and also threatening to murder him. This incident happened on Thursday afternoon. Chetcuti pleaded innocent to the charges.

According to Police Inspector James Grech, there were eight people witnessing the incident. Following investigations, it was concluded that Chetcuti had already waited outside Mr Farrugia’s office for an hour and a half to speak to him.

A few minutes after Chetcuti was called inside, people outside heard shouting, banging and a lot of noise coming from the office. On entering, they found Mr Farrugia lying face to the ground and Mr Chetcuti punching him. There was blood coming out of Mr Farrugia’s head.

According to The Times, the Inspector reported that it took three men to pull of Mr Chetcuti from Mr Farrugia, and once they managed to pull him off, Chetcuti shouted “If not today, tomorrow I will kill you.”

Mr Farrugia was given a six-month protection order by Magistrate Lawrence Quintano, while Mr Chetcuti was banned from entering GRTU premises.

Mr Chetcuti was remanded in custody, after the prosecution pointed out that all witnesses were afraid of him, and that a 38 year old man beat and attempted to kill a 65 year old man.

In the meantime, The Times reports that 24 hours after Mr Farrugia was beaten up, he was released from hospital on Friday morning, with bruises, stitches and a swollen face.
