European Commission to investigate Malta maritime departure tax
In a sequel to the airport departure tax investigation by the European Commission, the Commission has decided to investigate the legality of the Maritime departure tax imposed by the Maltese authorities on people departing by sea from Malta, AD - the Green Party said in a statement on Tuesday.
Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokratika spokesperson on EU and International Affairs, said: ‘Alternattiva Demokratika brought up the issue with the European Commission on discrimination by the Maltese authorities against citizens departing from Malta by sea. Following other complaints by private citizens to the European Parliament Petitions committee, the Commission has informed that it intends to contact the Maltese authorities and investigate the departure tax levied on passengers using maritime transport’.
Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, said: ‘It is good to see that the European Commission is following up the complaints of AD and other private citizens. European Union citizenship should bring with it the possibility for the Maltese to enjoy the freedom of movement which all other EU citizens enjoy, and should not mean the addition of illegitimate tax burdens’.
