Two representatives from TAWS (World Association for Transport Animal Welfare and Studies) will be in Malta from 9th-13th November. They will be meeting Myriam Kirmond, chairperson of Animal Rights Group, also representing Animal Rights Coalition ( a group of 20 local organisations) supporting the issue of protection from the elements for karozzini horses.

Professor GJR Hovell and Dr C Boyde, who are experts in this field, plan to meet with the authorities and all concerned to tackle the long overdue problem of karozzini horses in Malta.

TAWS will be proposing managment systems for working equines’ basic necessities. Solid structures that provide full shelter for the horses’ entire bodies, including the head, while these working horses wait for custom is a basic necessity. This will protect the horses from the normal 35C days with 80% humidity in Malta’s hot scorching summer months. Water, hygiene and other factors will also be discussed under suitable working management. A written report will then be submitted.

WSPA, of which TAWS is a member, had already contacted the authorities back in August. They hold consultative status at the United Nations and Council of Europe. They are fully backing the initiative to project a positive result about their requirments for all involved and have Malta reach EU mandated standards concerning working equines.
