Video: Church against excessive profane festa celebrations
A Church document launched by Archbishop Paul Cremona on Monday morning is proposing a number of changes and improvements as to how feasts are celebrated in Malta.
The document Restoring Feasts Together puts forward various proposals including:
- No band marches during Church functions -- Band marches are not to pass in front of rival band clubs
- No ‘surprises’ at village feasts
- Feasts celebrations are to last not more than one week
- During secondary feasts, churches are to be lit only on the eve of the feast and on the feast day itself
- More restrictions on street decorations and fireworks
- Statues should not be carried during band marches
- Only religious songs are to be sung at band marches
- Morning band marches can still be held but that they will have to stop if they are not brought under control within the next three years
The Archbishop stressed the fact that church feasts have to be based on love of the community and liturgical celebrations, rather than noisy behaviour and rivalries that are often associated with feasts at the moment.
