Over 150,000 Maltese own a European Health Insurance Card. The European Commission said that this card, which is free, was popular with those intending to travel abroad. In fact, last year, over 37,000 new cards were issued. Over 37% of Maltese travelling abroad own such a card.

Although this card can never replace a health insurance policy, nonetheless one can rest assured that thanks to this card one is covered for any health eventuality when abroad. The European Health Insurance Card is valid in all EU countries and also in Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Switzerland.
